Full-Stack Software Engineer

June - August 2018 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

I liked how Microsoft organized a variety of intern events. We had activities like concert, hiking, game night etc. Most importantly I gained a lot of industrial experience which I could never learn from school. This internship prepared me to ramp up my future career as a software engineer.

What I wish was different

I wish I could start to prepare for interview earlier and have some experienced CS students guide me through this job search process, so it could be easier and less frustrating.

Advice

I would say when working in a team, you’d better seek agreement among team members before implementation. It will be too late if it turns out the good work you did will break someone else’s work.

Software Development Intern

May - August 2018 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

The breadth of what I learned, getting to have ownership over a whole project, the ability to learn skills that my university doesn't teach.

What I wish was different

Better mentorship, more support from my manager

Advice

Speak up when you're confused or don't know how to do something - mentors and managers are there to help you, but they don't know how to help you if you don't speak up.

What I liked

I had a really challenging project and I liked how I was given ownership of it completely.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been communication earlier in the internship.

Advice

Err on the side of over communicating always. Make sure to set expectations and bring managers/mentors in sync.

Software Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

Microsoft provides such an inclusive environment I truly felt wanted and supported when I worked there. I really like the amount of technical support I was given too and the fact that you could email any random person that you never met but would like to speak to and they would set aside time to speak with you never lunch or a Skype call.

What I wish was different

This differs from team to team and from positions but in my case I really don't have any complaints

Advice

Make sure to ask a lot of questions, if you're blocked for more than 45minutes on a problem go ask your mentor, team member, or next available engineer you see. Everyone here is all trying to empower you and support you in achieving you goals and learning as much as possible.

Project Management Intern

May - August 2018 • Bellevue, WA

What I liked

I enjoyed the people I met and the overall culture of the company. It was a great way to learn about what being a PM is like.

What I wish was different

I was on a team with a bunch of senior PMs. I wish I was on a team that would give me a better understanding of what junior PM would do.

Advice

Always feel entitled to help. As an intern your entitled to your team members time and support. Never feel guilty or that you don't deserve someone time.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2018 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

There were a lot of really cool intern events. It was so easy to meet people my age with similar interests from all over the country. The campus is beautiful and Seattle is a great city to spend the summer.

What I wish was different

I should have been more proactive in calling out my manager and my team when they ignored my requests for help. I should have made sure things were escalated to people higher up the food chain. Otherwise, if I was on a different team, things might have been a lot better.

Advice

Microsoft has a lot of resources available to you. Take the time to use them. Have lunch with full time employees, even ones that aren't on your own team. Learn about the kinds of projects going on around the company. It's a great way to know what Microsoft does and how people have gotten to work on what they're working on.

What I liked

Microsoft has a fantastic intern program! I learned so much from my team and was able to have fun all summer while learning more about Microsoft culture and Microsoft as a company.

What I wish was different

Nothing!

Advice

Definitely apply to tons of places if you are looking for internships. I applied to tons of places before I got the Microsoft offer, and if you do choose intern here, don't be afraid to ask questions early on! It can be hard to work at a company this big where managers and mentors have plenty of other tasks on their minds besides nterns, but if you stop them and let them know you need some help, they will definitely be there for you!

Explore Intern

June - September 2018 • Redmond, WA

What I liked

The resources, different people, wide mentorship activities at a big company.

What I wish was different

The program did not allocate sufficient funds per intern, so a lot of activities/tours were on a lottery basis and not everyone could go, even though they were heavily advertised as what made the program worth it.

Advice

Although it might be awkward, it is the most important to set up one-on-ones with people whose work you find interesting and it won't be awkward for them because they are used to this kind of corporate culture.
