Middle East Policy Fall Internship
The policy intern positions (6) offer a unique opportunity to take part in the Washington policy conversation surrounding the political reform, democratization, and human rights of the Middle East and North Africa. DUE TO THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC, INTERNSHIPS WILL BE VIRTUAL.
As a policy intern you will play a crucial role in supporting our work by covering the news and debates around U.S. policy and the Middle East, writing and editing our weekly publications, engaging in long-term projects, and attending Congressional hearings and policy events. Interns will support various research activities, contribute to reports, and help plan logistics for regional visitors.
In addition, this position will provide research support for POMED reports and fact sheets, give input on regional politics or media, and attend relevant events and write summary notes.
While all POMED internships are unpaid, POMED will support the candidate in receiving academic credit for their work. Staff will work with the school/advisor on achieving desired learning outcomes and completing all necessary paperwork.
General Qualifications:
- Candidates should be supportive of POMED’s mission and principles.
- Demonstrated interest in U.S. foreign policy towards the Middle East and North Africa, particularly as it relates to the prospects for democratic reform in the region;
- Strong research, writing, and editing skills and attention to detail are required;
- Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible, as well as candidates not currently seeking academic degrees.
- Candidates with full-time availability are preferred, though part-time schedules will be considered.
- Successful applicants will be available for the duration of the internship term:
- Summer (beginning of June through mid-August): Due by April 1
- Above all, successful applicants will be enthusiastic, highly motivated individuals.
Specific Positions Available: Regional Policy Intern; Egypt Policy Intern; Gulf Policy Intern; Tunisia Policy Intern; Turkey Policy Intern; Communications Intern
- Proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic is required for the Egypt Policy Intern (an Arabic test will be administered to finalists);
- Proficiency in French is required for the Tunisia Policy Intern (a French test will be administered to finalists);
- Proficiency in Turkish is required for the Turkey Policy Intern (a Turkish test will be administered to finalists);
- Arabic and/or French are not required for the other positions.
