Learning specialist

Responsible for academic support and remediation, skill development and compensation in areas of individual challenge, including time management, organization, test-taking, and critical thinking skills, as well as developing students’ self-awareness regarding the nature of their learning disability and their cognitive strengths and assisting them in understanding and working effectively with their learning style. Provide motivational enhancement by assisting students in identifying acceptable levels of performance, cultivating self-awareness, and setting realistic goals. Facilitate students’ ability to communicate needs effectively with faculty, staff, parents, peers, and administration. Reinforce instruction and assist with assignment clarification by following guidelines provided and designed by the faculty and academic leadership. Refer students for additional assistance regarding personal issues to the appropriate resources on campus, including life coaches, counselors, and career specialists. Charged with academic advising regarding the academic coursework required for their major, as well as balancing students’ schedules to accommodate their learning style and/or learning disability. Work with students to identify appropriate accommodations. Serve as an interface between parents and faculty. Maintain a high level of expertise in the areas of learning disabilities, ADHD, and other learning differences.
