TRAVEL: Domestic and international travel as needed for trainings, meetings, and conferences.
ASRT, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of ASRT, Inc., and will be assigned to the Biotechnology Core Facility Branch (BCFB), Division of Scientific Resources (DSR), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic and Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), located at 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide project management services to support the Genome Sequencing Laboratory (GSL).
SCOPE OF WORK
The Microbiologist IV will provide project management services to support the Genome Sequencing Laboratory (GSL).
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct genomic sequencing library preparation and analysis using robotics and Illumina, PacBio, and Oxford Nanopore sequencers during laboratory surge events.
  • Develop, implement and maintain a system for tracking specimens as they are processed by the laboratory.
  • Monitor project progress and coordinate activities within the GSL to ensure project deadlines are met.
  • Develop, sustain, and manage a comprehensive metrics monitoring program.
  • Train in and conduct optical mapping analyses and associated procedures including DNA isolation and quality control.
  • Coordinate the maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment with internal and external partners.
  • Prepare sequencing project and assist with equipment acquisition budgets.
  • Assist with instrument demonstrations (demos) and instrument loan processing.
  • Conduct the setting up of agendas and organizing meetings of Technology Think Tank (TTT).
  • Conduct process improvement initiatives and track impact over time.
  • Report performance metrics on routine activities and research projects to leadership on a routine basis.
  • Use knowledge of molecular biology to document and implement technical protocols and standard operating procedures.
  • Prepare documentation for ordering laboratory reagents.
  • Assist with training scientists in the areas of next generation sequencing and genomics.
  • Collect, analyze, and present laboratory performance data for review by branch chief and team leads.
  • Conduct informatics literature investigations of molecular technologies and their applications in infectious diseases research and public health.
  • Engage CDC investigators to foresee future operational and technical needs of the Core (BCFB).
  • Maintain positive customer relations.
  • Conduct marketing of BCFB services to CDC investigators.
  • Conduct routine customer feedback surveys.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher (Master's or Ph.D.) with at least 24 semester hours in molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, mathematics, statistics, bioinformatics, or informatics.
Required:
  • Previous experience in a similar role
  • 1-3 years of demonstrated experience with bioinformatics, bioinformatics analytical tools, microbiology, and molecular biology laboratory techniques
  • Proficiency in the analysis, assembly, and annotation of genomic data from a variety of sequencing platforms such as Illumina and PacBio
  • Familiarity with molecular and microbiological techniques for the gathering and utilization of genomic data
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint 
  • Strong interpersonal skills required for work in a multidisciplinary team environment and extensive interaction with people across CDC and external partners
  • Background in biology, computer, bioinformatics, and/or public health sciences
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills
  • Capable of developing and executing research and routine tasks independently
  • Immunizations may be required
Desirable: 
  • Experience coordinating and maintaining workflows for genomics data processing and analysis
  • Preparation of genomic sequence library development utilizing robotics and a variety of sequencing platforms
  • Experience with Microsoft Access
Language Skills:
  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
