Research Technician I, Evolutionary Virology

Cures Start Here. At Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, home to three Nobel laureates, interdisciplinary teams of world-renowned scientists seek new and innovative ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Fred Hutch’s pioneering work in bone marrow transplantation led to the development of immunotherapy, which harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer. An independent, nonprofit research institute based in Seattle, Fred Hutch houses the nation’s first cancer prevention research program, as well as the clinical coordinating center of the Women’s Health Initiative and the international headquarters of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network. Careers Start Here.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Technician I in the Malik Lab in the Basic Sciences Division (click here to go to the lab webpage). It is ideally suited for someone comfortable with microbiology and molecular biology techniques who has a strong interest in scientific research. The Research Technician will have an opportunity to carry out their own research project, under the supervision of a senior researcher in the lab, and will earn authorship on any scientific papers to which they contribute. We hope to provide the Research Technician with the training needed to pursue their research interests in a graduate program of their choosing.
We are an enthusiastic team of scientists working at the interface of evolutionary and molecular biology, with deep interest in discovery and basic science research. Our research is comprised of evolutionary studies of genetic conflict, including the conflicts within centromeres, innate immunity against viruses, and mobile genetic elements.
Responsibilities
  • The primary focus of this position is to identify and characterize novel variants of antiviral immune proteins, using an evolution-guided approach that our lab has pioneered and is developing further. The work will involve molecular biology (e.g., molecular cloning, DNA purification, sequencing), tissue culture, virology, flow cytometry, and biochemistry (e.g., protein purification, binding assays).
  • Secondary responsibilities include lab management (e.g., maintaining media stocks), ordering scientific lab supplies, and maintaining equipment.
  • Based on the interest and ability of the technician, they may also be solely responsible for the development and execution of independent, small-scale research projects.
  • Successful projects in which the technician participates may lead to authorship on scientific publications.
  • Handling cell lines and viral or virus-like particles (including biosafety level 2 organisms), molecular biology, and large-scale data analysis will be required.
  • Participation in lab meetings and presentation of data will be required.
Qualifications
  • Specific experience with mammalian cell culture and aseptic technique, PCR, gel electrophoresis, molecular cloning, and transformation is required.
  • Experience addressing a research question, as part of a research environment beyond standard university coursework, is desired.
  • Prior experience with biochemistry, virology, Illumina sequencing, and flow cytometry preferred, but not essential.
  • Education requirements: a bachelor’s degree in biology or a related discipline in a laboratory environment.
  • Superior verbal and written communication and routine computer skills (PC/Mac) are necessary.
  • Meticulous attention to detail is essential.
  • Superior organizational skills in recordkeeping, prioritizing responsibilities, time management, and an ability to interact with all levels of staff are requirements.
