Position Details
Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

SIPP, in partnership with the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), is seeking a year-long AmeriCorps Member to gather information and work with the Birmingham Field Office to best understand the current situation regarding bond forfeiture and temporary cessation sites. This research will allow the formulation of a plan of action to remedy off-site impacts, return the forfeited land back to the landowners, help determine the risk of sites becoming forfeitures, and hopefully help prevent sites from becoming forfeiture sites in the future.

All related information from the research will provide a current and historical picture of the issue to help determine the risk of these sites becoming bond forfeiture sites and hopefully help prevent them from becoming a forfeiture site.

There are many bond forfeiture sites in Alabama with little information known about them. A comprehensive listing and detailed inventory will allow the Field Office to better understand what the situation is as well as determine what steps should be taken to lessen the amount of forfeiture sites contributing to off-site impacts and help get the land returned to the landowners. Many of these sites are causing off-site impacts and environmental damage due to the lack of reclamation.
