Position Details
Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.
 
SIPP, in partnership with the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE), is seeking a year-long AmeriCorps Member to work with OSMRE Pittsburgh staff on a variety of tasks, including: Inventorying and scanning aperture cards and hardcopy maps, assisting in data collection, reducing backlog of maps to be entered into the National Mine Map Repository (NMMR) database, potentially digitizing and georeferencing maps. The incumbent will be directly involved in adding to the pool of mine map information available for these purposes. They will be provided with ample opportunity to improve GIS skills in real-world situations. Additionally, the incumbent will learn the techniques of managing complex processes and gain an understanding of coal mining and the problems that can be created by mining activities.
 
Information derived from mine maps have been used by OSMRE’s Technical Support Division personnel to address significant post-mining environmental impacts, in particular, impacted water discharges from underground mines. OSMRE routinely investigates these impacts and these interns will be directly involved in adding to the pool of mine map information available for these purposes, providing a vital contribution to the agency.
