Program Development Internship

ABOUT ASAP

The Armed Services Arts Partnership (ASAP) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a mission to cultivate community and growth with veterans, service members, military family members, and caregivers through the arts.

We offer classes, workshops, and performances across a variety of art forms, including stand-up comedy, storytelling, creative writing, acting, the visual arts, and more. Across all programs, we focus on building community, fostering self-expression, and promoting well-being for our veteran participants.

In five years, we have served 1,000 veterans through 250 classes and workshops. Our alumni have performed for an estimate of more than 100,000 audience members, including shows at the Warner Theater, Gotham Comedy Club, for Former President Jimmy Carter, and at The White House under President Obama. We have been featured by CNN, ABC, NBC, PBS, NPR, The Washington Post, POLITICO, Forbes, and more.


POSITION SUMMARY

The Program Development Intern will support ASAP's Program Manager and Program Coordinators in the planning and execution of ASAP’s classes, workshops, and performances across its service areas (DC and Hampton Roads). ASAP is looking for a creative, entrepreneurial individual who is passionate about the arts, supporting veterans’ transition home, and building a start-up from the ground-level. Our internships are remote based. Qualified applicants must be able to work evenings and weekends in support of the organization’s programs and performances. The primary duties and responsibilities of the position are detailed below:


PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the planning and execution of programs in a fast-paced start-up environment in order to facilitate ASAP’s programmatic excellence and growth
  • Help manage relationships and directly interface with instructors, volunteers, students, classroom and performance venues, and other partners to effectively execute ASAP’s programs and performances
  • Support the development, budgeting, implementation, evaluation, and revision of ASAP’s arts curricula
  • Assist with the creation and execution of processes for expanding the program, including instructor assessment and training, admissions, program/performance standard operating procedures, program communications, and volunteer recruitment and management
  • Support partnership development with local arts instructors, arts organizations, colleges, veterans organizations, and businesses
  • Perform all other program-related tasks as needed
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

This person will be critical in supporting the execution and growth of ASAP’s programs. S/he will be responsible for helping to implement ASAP’s programmatic vision and ensure that the day-to-day operations run smoothly. As such, s/he must have the ability to work independently and autonomously, demonstrate flexibility in the face of changing demands, diligently drive execution, and be present for the organization’s evening and weekend programs/performances. Other qualifications include:

  • Interest in project management and execution, curriculum and training development, event planning, and external communications; interest in arts, veterans affairs, or mental health preferred; experience working in an office a plus
  • Ability to operate, prioritize, and thrive in a demanding, high-growth, start-up environment; proven ability to solve complex problems with limited data and directions; intellectually curious and driven to develop skills in areas in which s/he may be deficient; high tolerance for stress, ambiguity, and change  
  • Superior attention to detail; excellent written and verbal communications skills; open to receiving and willing to deliver constructive feedback; comfortable interacting with a variety of stakeholders
  • Entrepreneurial; capable of managing time effectively and efficiently in a remote work environment; thrives in highly autonomous situations in which s/he has the opportunity to drive her/his own work
  • Preferred proficiency in: Microsoft Office Suite; Google Drive, Calendar, Documents, Sheets, and Forms; Slack and task management software; and Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn
