Description
The Center for Addiction Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital is seeking highly qualified and motivated students for a short-term Clinical Research Data Science internship to gain in-depth exposure to the daily operations of clinical research and help with data cleaning and analysis for community-based, translational research on substance use interventions in vulnerable populations, including adolescents and people with serious mental illness.

Responsibilities
The Clinical Research Data Science Intern will work in data management operations and will be offered opportunities to learn and hone skills related to the analysis of clinical research data as well as pragmatic data management and programming (e.g., merging datasets, recoding variables, calculating new variables). Under general supervision of senior investigators, the statistician, and the programmer, the individual will be responsible for data coordination, data integrity, and data management for the program. The data science intern will be responsible for processing and cleaning datasets as well as streamlining current workflows for the dissemination of these datasets

Other duties and responsibilities may include:
  • Extracting and cleaning REDCap databases
  • Performing advanced and routine data quality assurance and creating reports
  • Assisting investigators in assembling and cleaning databases
  • Developing programs to check the integrity of the data
  • Developing programs to share cleaned datasets with non-technical users
  • Preparing reports on the quantity of data and quality in the data management system
  • Retrieving data and generating reports from the database as requested by staff
  • Considering both back-end organization of data and front-end accessibility for end users and applications
  • Generating reports to end users
  • Pulling data and providing clean datasets to end users
  • Supporting the Center statistician and programmer as needed 

Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or Master’s degree in computer science, statistics, or similar quantitative field
  • Relevant coursework in data science, programming & design, and user interface, preferred
  • Experience in research preferred
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Prior programming experience, ideally with R or python and git version control (GitHub/GitLab) required
  • Familiarity with REDCap and RStudio preferred
  • Familiarity in a Unix/Linux environment and with basic website development using nginx, HTML/CSS, etc. preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A desire to learn in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong initiative and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Extremely detail oriented and self-motivated/flexible
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Proficient in English
  
Requirements
Weekday availability of at least 10 hours per week, more availability is always welcomed. The position will be 100% remote and requires Internet access. The individual can schedule when they complete their work, but they should have some availability for regular meetings 9am-5pm, M-F.

*This is an unpaid internship.
**Receiving course credit for the internship is optional.

Goals
After the internship, interns will be able to:
  • Have experience in the design and build of infrastructure and workflows to support non-technical end users.
  • Prepare a short oral presentation of their work or assigned topic at the completion of the cycle

For highly qualified, motivated candidates, it may be possible to apply this internship toward the completion of an academic requirement (e.g., thesis).
