Summer 2021 Law Clerk

 The Graduate Student Assistant(s) work as summer term law clerks to support the mission of CARB’s Legal Office. They will have the opportunity to attend meetings and engage in projects concerning the most important environmental issues of today, including climate change. They will work closely with and learn from some of the world’s top technical and legal staff in the field of climate change and air quality. Their efforts will contribute to the State’s progress in improving California’s air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The projects available during the summer clerkship term will include conducting research and producing legal documents, such as memoranda and draft regulatory documents, as directed by Legal Office Attorneys, under the ultimate supervision of an Assistant Chief Counsel. Their work is designed to provide the Graduate Student Assistant(s) a meaningful, hands-on professional experience that supplements their academic graduate work and trains them for future positions in any area of law. The Graduate Student Assistant will have the opportunity to explore the stages of policymaking—from rulemaking to enforcement—in greater detail, and be exposed to related areas such as tribal law. Further, the position will provide the Graduate Student Assistant(s) an opportunity to explore the State Capitol.
Qualifications:
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by the quality and breadth of their experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate: Candidates should be familiar with the functioning of administrative agencies in State government. The incumbent must be able to demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills and have excellent computer skills. The candidate must have the ability to exercise good judgment and work effectively and cooperatively within a diverse working environment. 
Among other qualities, the most highly desirable candidates will possess:
•    Strong analytical, critical thinking, research, writing, and editing skills, as well as the ability to offer and consider different perspectives.
•    A demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects with tight deadlines and respond appropriately to technical issues.
•    Creativity, independence, strong attention to detail, and the ability to tackle challenges effectively.
•    Flexibility and willingness to learn in a fast-paced work environment, and the ability to accommodate last-minute changes.
•    Proficiency in Microsoft Word and ability to learn Outlook applications, Excel, and SharePoint.
