Molecular Biology Intern, Automation Team

As a Molecular Biology Intern on the Automation team, you’ll operate our DNA assembly pipeline to construct plasmids for downstream applications. You’ll apply and develop your molecular biology skills, including PCR, DNA purification, DNA assembly, media preparation, transformations, and preparation of high-throughput sequencing libraries. To run our automated workflows you’ll use liquid handling robots and software tools. You will provide technical support to the scientists, as well as perform experiments and collect and analyze data. Your close attention to detail for quality control and protocol troubleshooting will be essential. You’ll work closely with the entire Automation team who have diverse backgrounds including hardware engineering, automation engineering, and molecular biology. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the platform you’ll interface with our cross-disciplinary team of bioinformaticians, fungal geneticists, chemists, and biochemists while utilizing tools developed by our software engineers. This position is ideal for someone who is passionate about using synthetic biology for drug discovery.

This is a paid internship opportunity. 

Key Qualifications:
  • B.S. or higher in molecular biology or related degree
  • Available to work 40 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months
  • 1+ years industry experience or 2+ years in an academic lab required
  • Experience is required in molecular biology techniques such as PCR, Gibson Assembly, cloning, plasmid DNA extraction, media making, and transformations of E.coli and yeast
  • Basic understanding of data tracking using spreadsheets is required
  • Basic understanding of python programming is preferred
  • Experience with Benchling is preferred
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to follow oral and/or written instructions
  • Strong scientific curiosity and passion for drug development
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, start-up environment and prioritize responsibilities
  • Available to work in Menlo Park, California
