Assistant District Traffic Engineer - Southwestern Regional Operations

In this role, you will be able to plan, lead, and direct activities and performance of engineers, utilize your operational analysis and safety experience to manage projects and programs, work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support preliminary engineering activities for VDOT projects, support land development activities, and further VDOT’s role in leading transportation initiatives.

In this role, you will be able to plan, lead, and direct activities and performance of engineers, utilize your operational analysis and safety experience to manage projects and programs, work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support preliminary engineering activities for VDOT projects, support land development activities, and further VDOT’s role in leading transportation initiatives.

Here are some highlights of the areas of responsibilities for this A/E II Manager position:
  • Conduct and supervise operational analyses to guide projects, development access, and operations
  • Develop and design innovative concepts for strategic intersection and corridor improvements, including near term initiatives and longer term capital improvement projects and studies
  • Design communications networks and traffic signal improvements to facilitate remote, real time corridor operations
  • Contribute to safety programs to reduce fatalities, serious injuries, and crashes
  • Network with signal staff in Salem, Bristol and Lynchburg Districts and localities served in the Southwest Region
  • Collaborate with VDOT divisions and consultants to deliver robust traffic engineering services

Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in Civil Engineering or course work including traffic engineering, transportation engineering, or similar.
  • Ability to work under minimum supervision and/or direction on multiple projects, with varying delivery dates, and for multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience managing a large work load in an engineering environment with time sensitive deadlines and working with local governments, elected officials, citizens and engineering consultants.
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic engineering principles and practices related to traffic engineering, traffic control equipment, operational analysis, project management, and related communications systems.
  • Experience in evaluating complex operational and traffic engineering problems and exercising independent judgment in reaching a solution.
  • Ability to work with and analyze the result of multiple traffic analysis software programs, including but not limited to: Synchro, Highway Capacity Software, etc.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing across a diverse geographic region.
  • Ability to train and direct the work of technical staff.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Considerable knowledge of traffic engineering, operations and flow theory including experience with traffic analysis software.
  • Ability to read and interpret site plans, highway construction plans, and traffic control plans; prioritize and coordinate various projects and tasks of considerable complexity with multiple time sensitive deadlines.
  • Considerable knowledge of signal and ITS communication infrastructure and development.
  • Knowledge of land development principles and practices.
  • Possess effective communication skills with the ability to interact with citizens, elected officials, as well as department staff, both orally and in writing.
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification preferred.
