The Medical Unit in MSF New York is a part of the Medical Department of Operational Center – Paris (OCP). It provides technical support for a variety of non-communicable diseases, including epilepsy, as well as medical editorial support for peer-reviewed journal articles and other scientific communications.
 
Project
 
The Medical Unit intern would support two portfolios (non-communicable diseases/NCD and Scientific Publications portfolios): 

NCD work will involve a scientific literature review of the available evidence on newer anticonvulsants for new-onset and refractory epilepsy, with an emphasis on Levetiracetam’s appropriateness for inclusion in the WHO EML and EMLc. 

Scientific publications work will include several analyses’ of OCP’s publishing tendencies, including of journals used, altmetrics scores (among other impact indicators), authorship profiles, and other characteristics as needed. The intern will also assist the Medical Editor crafting a social media strategy for better amplification of OCP published papers.

Depending on time allowance, the intern may assist with other technical literature reviews as needed for the Medical Unit.
 
Tasks
  • Scientific literature review on the need for new Anti-Epileptic Drugs (AED) to be included as first line therapies in the WHO Essential medical list (EML), especially for specific populations (pregnant women, patients with HIV, etc..), children, and humanitarian contexts.
  • Scientific literature review of the available Evidence on “newer” anticonvulsants in new-onset and refractory Epilepsy, with a special comparison of Levetiracetam vs Lamotrigine
  • Review of the recommendations from key medical institutions and main actors in Epilepsy
  • Mapping analysis of Epilepsy activities in OCP
  • Analyze OCP authorship in peer-reviewed journal articles over 5 years to assess the balance of gender and project level/HQ level representation (especially first and last authorship)
  •  Analyze OCP peer-review journal articles’ impact using altmetrics score, journal impact factor, and MSF ReMIT info (when available) over five years to assess publication impact
  • Finalize MSF medical journal database, assessing journal suitability for MSF publication by specialty
  • Help create a social media strategy, collaborating with the Medical Editor and the MSF-NY and Paris communications departments, to better amplify OCP’s scientific communications.
  • Other support to Med Unit literature reviews as needed.
 

Qualifications

  • Medical or public health degree
  • Familiarity with neurology or internal medicine, interest in epilepsy an asset.
  • Experience performing scientific literature reviews
  • Past authorship in peer-reviewed journal articles in reputable medical journals
  • Ability to summarize large amounts of information into concise briefing papers, memos, or recommendations
  • Knowledge/use of social media, especially for scientific content and communications
  • Ability to work and collaborate with a team remotely
