Librarian - Special Collections and Archiving

SALARY: $47,715.20 - $76,153.17 Annually
OPENING DATE: 01/05/21

REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES:

The Broward County, Board of County Commissioners is seeking a highly motivated, energetic, knowledgeable and efficient candidate to serve as the Librarian Full Time of Special Collections for the Broward County Libraries to help preserve, document and display collections, archives and records which have a direct relationship to the history, archaeology, culture and institutions of Broward County, Florida. Collections range from prehistoric artifacts to present-day audiovisual recordings and is the County's official repository for historical government records and archaeological materials. The extensive collection of books, personal papers, organizational and institutional records supports research in education, literature, and community.

The purpose of this position is to plan, supervise and coordinate the activities of a service section. This includes supervising staff, project or program coordination cultivating outreach efforts, and supporting division-wide initiatives. This position is also responsible for collection development, youth and adult reference services, programs and readers advisory.

The selected candidate in this position must have the abilities to manage multiple priorities, tasks and work effectively; both independently and collaboratively, display excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills, demonstrate initiative, flexibility, and exhibit a solid commitment to creativity and continuous learning, including the ability to learn new technologies.

The ideal candidate will also be responsible for arranging and describing archival collections, including knowledge of relevant descriptive standards (DACS, EAD, EAC-CPF). Additional duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: assisting with cataloging of collections; assisting in the location of new materials to include their acquisitions; displaying the coordination of educational and public outreach programs such as, tours, workshops, lectures and classes; and assist in the set-up of exhibits and related events that showcase collections.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Requires a Master's degree from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association in Library Science, Library and Information Science, or closely related field.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Possess a valid Florida Class E driver's license at time of appointment and the ability to obtain and maintain authorization to drive on County business.

Preferences:

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include days, evenings, nights, and weekends.
  • Masters' degree or higher in Archival Studies
  • Certificate in Archival Studies
  • One (1) year or more experience in organizing archival records and developing classification systems to facilitate access to archival materials
  • Participation in courses focused on current practices in archiving through workshops, seminars, or webinars (recent certificate received for participation)
  • Two (2) or more years cataloging archival experience

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Description:

Performs related library services and provides customer service to library patrons.

Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Duties And Responsibilities:

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

  • Works at the circulation desk answering reference questions, phone calls, providing computer assistance, locating or reserving items for customers, and directing customers to other areas of the library.
  • Coordinates the adult programming schedule; creates and runs programs for teens, tweens, and children to meet the educational and recreational needs of youth in the community, and provides an attractive and stimulating environment for youth to learn and grow; plans, develops and conducts special exhibits; provides age appropriate programming to babies up to age three, along with their parents.
  • Assists in all aspects of summer reading program, booking entertainment, providing programs, decorations, displays, registration and prizes; advertises events in print and electronic formats.
  • Trains, supervises, and writes performance appraisals for paraprofessionals and other subordinate employees, including teen volunteers to provide service opportunities to teens in the community and to assist the branch with day to day operational needs.
  • Maintains collection in assigned areas by fixing call number errors, repairing damaged items and labels, wedding materials to remove damaged, outdated materials and redistributing to locations where they will of better use, and selecting donated items to add to the collection to keep the collection relevant, in good condition, to increase the collection and make it accessible.
  • Provides assistance with computers, including reservations, printing, scanning, software assistance, internet trouble shooting, logging into the network, and e-books, to enable library customers to successfully use the technology the library offers.
  • Acts as Supervisor in Charge on a rotating basis, taking responsibility for the building and handling any crisis that may arise; enforces the library's code of conduct to ensure a safe and pleasant environment for all library customers.
  • Acts as liaison between the library and academic partners as well as external agencies; conducts database and bibliographic instruction classes to the general public and academic partners; develops book displays to create interest, display, and promote materials on certain topics or themes; develops special projects such as new or special programming or grant proposals.
  • Compiles monthly statistical reports to keep track of library usage, program attendance and other factors; compiles and sends out new best sellers, new music CDs (compact discs), audiobooks, and DVDs (digital video disc) email newsletters.
  • Maintains department schedule, including recording weekly hours for department members on a centralized building schedule, scheduling all appropriate staff to cover service desks, and maintaining a scheduling calendar for agency staff.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs light work that involves walking or standing most of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of electronic office equipment within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
