Systems Engineer - Global Burst Detector (Early Career)

We are seeking an experienced Systems Engineer to join our Global Burst Detector (GBD) IIIF Systems Engineering team. The selected applicant will fill a key role in the development and qualification of the next generation satellite payload supporting the United States Nuclear Detonation (NUDET) Detection System (USNDS).
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Build trust-based relationships and partner with internal and external organizations
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and domain specialists in the successful resolution of system related issues
  • Use engineering principles to conduct trade studies to identify system solutions
  • Conduct peer reviews for other design efforts and concepts within the Labs
  • Brief management and external partners on the status of the IIIF GBD program

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor’s and advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in a STEM field plus one year related experience; OR Bachelor's degree in a STEM field plus five years' related experience
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance.
  • Occasional to moderate travel may be required

Qualifications We Desire

  • Self-motivated, positive individual comfortable working in a fast-paced, results oriented environment
  • Proficiency with formal Systems Engineering process with a focus on the verification phase
  • Experience with Satellite System design, development, and qualification
  • Direct experience with the USNDS mission and GBD
  • Proven experience executing qualification and delivery of systems
  • Experience working with: National Nuclear Security Administration, the Air Force, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and DoD contractors
  • Familiarity with: delivering high precision systems, production, product development and qualification, testing and evaluation, modeling and simulation
  • Experience in leading a diverse workforce.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively (written and verbal)
  • Possess strong dedication to team environment dynamics with the ability to contribute expertise across multiple technical teams
  • Experience using engineering principles to conduct trade studies to identify system solutions

About Our Team

We have researched and developed new monitoring systems and technologies for over half a century. Building on that legacy, today we support national security missions involving nuclear proliferation detection, treaty monitoring, arms control, and various needs within the national security communities.
The Global Burst Detector (GBD) Design and Development Department is responsible for management of next-generation US Nuclear Detonation (NUDET) Detection System (USNDS) payloads that support the United States’ space-based capability to monitor the earth’s atmosphere and surrounding space for nuclear events. The department serves as the primary technical interface and System Integrator to the USNDS community for the next generation GBD payload. The department works with the USNDS partners to define future payload performance and operational requirements, and then designs, produces, and integrates GBD IIIF payloads to support the NNSA in their role as acquisition agent for government-furnished payloads.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
