Paid Grad. Work, Duke University Press
Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies

Duke University Press is seeking a graduate student to serve as the official proofreader for the Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies with the Journals Publishing and Partnerships team. The work involves proofreading three issues per year for JMEMS, approximately 46 hours per issue. The successful candidate for this position will demonstrate excellent writing skills, the ability to focus deeply on technical detail, knowledge of proofreading conventions, knowledge of medieval and early modern studies, and a positive attitude. We’re particularly interested in a student who is available to start work immediately this February and continue into the next academic year(s).

General Job Duties: The Graduate Student Proofreader for the Journal of Medieval and Early Modern Studies is responsible for proofreading each journal issue (three issues per year that range from 190 to 235 pages). The work for each issue must be done within a two- to three-week time frame, meeting the deadline given by the editor. Pay is the Graduate Student rate of $12/hr.

Proofreading for JMEMS entails the following: correcting grammar and syntax, spelling, punctuation, mistranscriptions of source quotations, and errors in bibliographical citations; applying the journal’s preferred style formats; and improving readability of articles by making small changes in wording and punctuation. Changes are made directly in the PDF files of the articles using the Comment palette in Adobe Acrobat. The work may be done wherever the student wishes. The authors of articles also proofread their own work. The editor then approves and collates the changes made by the proofreader and the authors, making adjustments as needed. The student proofreader’s work must be accurate and reliable as the one who is reading the proofs for the journal on a detailed level.

Education/Training: Must be a currently enrolled graduate student working in the field of medieval and early modern studies. The student needs a confident knowledge of bibliographical conventions in the humanities and a comfortable working knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style. Modest knowledge of Latin and any modern foreign languages used in scholarship is highly desirable, and knowledge of Adobe Acrobat editing of PDF files is a plus. The editor will provide additional training.

Experience: We prefer that the student has experience in proofreading for publication, or in editing the work of others. Students must have demonstrated skill in writing clearly and effectively.

If interested in applying send an e-mail to StudentJobs@dukeUpress.edu before close of the position on Wed. January 27, 2021. Please put “JMEMS Student Job” in the subject line, attach your résumé and cover letter, and include contact information for three references.
