SUMMER Remote (Virtual) Social Justice Advocacy Intern, Jacksonville Urban League (JUL) Center for Advocacy and Social Justice (CASJ)

The Jacksonville Urban League is a nonprofit, special-service and advocacy organization that works to fulfill its mission of empowering communities and changing lives. Founded in 1947 as an affiliate of the National Urban League, the League has focused on a holistic approach to its goal of providing individuals and families the tools that can empower them toward a productive and successful life. Since its founding, more than six decades ago, the League has remained steadfast to service – including early education, housing education and repairs, increasing employment opportunities, creating economic and social justice initiatives, and bolstering economic development in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

JUL's Center for Advocacy and Social Justice is seeking several  Social Justice Advocacy Interns (for-credit position) to assist the CASJ Director and Social Justice Advocacy Coordinator in developing the CASJ Social Justice Advocacy Program.

Topics for this summer include, but are not limited to: Health Access, Criminal Justice Reform, NFL Franchise Social Justice, Business Development, Employment, Legal

While the program has historically relied on law students, the Center is looking to gain insight from students from a variety of different disciplines, including law, public health, political science, education, social sciences, economics, and business.

The CASJ Internship Program operates year-round but is generally organized by semesters. Students are given the opportunity to gain valuable experience in fields focused on developing and implementing social justice public policy. Interns are assigned to CASJ lawyers to gain hands-on experience while improving their organizing, research, analytical, and writing skills.

The responsibilities of this position include:
○      Drafting papers on a subject concerning social justice and equality,
○      Organizing and leading townhalls that engage the community in the subject,
○ Marketing, social media management, and community outreach

○      Credit-based positions: prospective interns are encouraged to contact their law school/undergraduate school/graduate school for potential academic credit. The CASJ has its own Field Placement Manual comparable to that of many law schools that ensures adequate mentoring, supervision, and assessment. For for-credit placements, the model allows for source faculty oversight if desired by the source law/undergraduate/graduate school. The CASJ is led by a former law professor who is available as a faculty substitute.
  • If summer internship funding is available through your school for unpaid and low-paid internships, we are more than happy to work with you, your school, or any outside funding sources to complete any required paperwork/application materials for funding.

○      Paid positions: paid interns are encouraged to contact Dennis Stone directly to apply for the position.
