Position Purpose: To use a proactive approach of written content to generate interest in South Dakota as a place to do business and live a fulfilling life. Responsibilities include: writing and editing a variety of press releases, media advisories, talking points, video scripts, creative copywriting and feature articles, targeting statewide and industry media, legislators, boards, and local economic development community leaders; research industry publications and help coordinate efforts for earned media in GOED’s targeted industries; providing support to the Director of Public Relations and the different facets within the Governor’s Office of Economic Development by also writing correspondence, preparing speeches/talking points, media interview materials, and PowerPoint presentations; responding to media inquiries; assisting with social media efforts and other marketing and public relations duties as needed. 
Occasional travel required.
This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Applicants with exemplary writing (including creative copywriting) and editing skills; excellent interviewing skills; and 3-5 years of public relations/journalism experience are preferred
Knowledge of:
  • public relations techniques;
  • business English, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation;
  • Associated Press style;
  • Microsoft computer software applications and computer operation.
  • media distribution software such as Cision/Meltwater
  • South Dakota's main economic industries.
Skill to:
  • assist Director of Public Relations in implementing and measuring internal/external media communication plans.
Ability to:
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with media, staff, and the public;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely;
  • organize and prioritize work;
  • research and compile information;
  • work independently or as part of a team.
