Application Software Specialist


Salary:     $44,488.08 - $68,334.86 Annually

Bachelor's degree in computer science, information sciences, or a related field and one year of recent, responsible experience with software applications; or any equivalent combination of related training and experience. Must possess a valid State of Florida Driver's license and be insurable by District’s insurance carrier. Successful completion of a criminal history background investigation is required prior to employment. Evening and weekend work hours may be required. Experience with SQL report writing, Microsoft Office 365 and/or SharePoint, and web programming preferable.

 Position Summary:
This is highly responsible work in the selection, implementation and support of software modules used by Library Administration, staff, and the general public in the Alachua County Library District.

An employee assigned to this classification is responsible for the installation and support of software modules within and among all Library District outlets. This includes studying and evaluating software alternatives, recommending procurement and implementation of the most efficient modules, developing and presenting training material and sessions to staff and public.

Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher level supervisor and is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation of results obtained.

Schedules the installation and configuration of software in all Library District outlets on both Library District and office automation systems.

Consults with staff to evaluate input, processing requirements, and desired output making recommendations on effective use of software modules.

Assists staff and users in troubleshooting problems on MacIntosh and PC workstations, terminals, and systems console.

Conducts research projects and assists the Support Services Manager, as required.

Evaluates existing hardware and software and new innovations in application modules. Prepares cost estimates for system software upgrades. Recommends additions and/or changes to the existing system.

Trains Automated Services staff in the use of software and related hardware; develops material and conducts training programs for all Library District staff. Documents training procedures.

Works as liaison with software vendors to debug, monitor and resolve operating conflicts or problems.

Performs related duties as required.

Thorough knowledge of Library automation software, online databases, Internet Browsers, and office application packages.

Considerable knowledge of UNIX, Windows, and Apple MacIntosh operating systems in a TCP/IP and NT networking environment.

Ability to plan, schedule and coordinate work on a variety of projects.

Ability to develop and carry out objectives.

Ability to transport self and/or equipment to all Library District agencies/locations.

Ability to train and motivate staff in the use of available hardware and software modules.

Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with Library District employees and employees of other agencies/companies.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to effectively prioritize and organize work.
Understand how and why Library policies and procedures were developed.
Ensure patron compliance of all policies and procedures through effective communication and enforcement.
