GENERAL SUMMARY OF POSITION: 
UMass Medical School’s Information Technology Innovation Internship program is designed to provide exceptional opportunities for talented students and to strengthen UMMS’ technology ecosystem through the innovative ideas and infectious energy of the interns. The Data Science Intern is responsible for modeling clinical and research problems, discovering insights and identifying opportunities through the use of statistical, algorithmic, mining and visualization techniques. In addition to analytical skills, this role is also familiar with integrating and preparing varied datasets, designing database and computing environments, and presenting results. This intern would work closely with select clients, and other IT teams to turn data into actionable information and knowledge that can be used to make sound organizational decisions. Core traits include creative thinking, innovative proposals, and experience with data mining techniques. They will need to validate their findings using an experimental and iterative approach. In addition, he/she will perform diverse duties in a manner consistent with a dynamic and active biomedical education and research community.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Utilize innovative ideas and approaches to assist in the development of working models to serve the needs of our faculty, students and researchers
  • Complete a project from start to finish and write-up and present the work product to the UMass community
  • Participate in team projects
  • Conduct online research
  • Perform other duties as required
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be a currently enrolled student in a higher education institution or recent graduate
  • Solid analytical and communication skills
  • Attention to detail with the ability to collect and record information from a wide variety of sources
  • Must be reliable and able to set consistent work hours
  • Proven interest in IT and passion in furthering the mission of UMMS
  • Must have above average academic performance
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience with hyper-scale cloud services (AWS, Azure, GCP)
  • Familiarity with machine learning and analytical tools, preferably in Python
  • Knowledge of RDBMS systems, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, etc
  • Knowledge of NoSQL systems like MongoDB, Amazon DynamoDB.
  • Experience using and building application containers & platforms (i.e: Docker)
  • EPIC certification(s)
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
This is paid, 100% offsite internship position
Duration: 6 months with possibility for extension up to 12 months
