Securities and Retail Franchising Internship
$16/hour

The State Corporation Commission (SCC) is searching for talented, hard-working individuals interested in impacting the lives of Virginians during the summer of 2022. The SCC’s Division of Securities and Retail Franchising (SRF) looks to fill two paid ($16/hour) internships. The first available internship will offer the opportunity to gain an understanding of the Virginia Trademark and Service Mark Act (TM/SM) through analyzing and reviewing submitted applications. The second available internship will offer exposure to the Registration, Examination, Audit, and Investigative sections of SRF through participation in key tasks performed by each section.

The SCC is a state agency located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. The SCC has regulatory authority over many business and economic interests in Virginia. The SCC strives to create a balanced playing field not only for consumers, but for companies as well. The SRF division focuses on the regulation of securities, broker dealers, broker dealer agents, investment advisors and their representatives, and the registration of trademarks and service marks. First Internship Job Description
·      Ensuring submitted TM/SM applications and supporting materials are complete and information satisfies the registration standards of the Trademark Act and regulations of the Commission
·      Preparing a presentation for senior leadership outlining their overall work process, an analysis of approaches and outcomes (including pitfalls and resolution)
·      Engaging with and learning from senior-level staff members

Second Internship Job Description
·      Assisting staff in reviewing Franchise, Investment Advisor, and Broker Dealer registrant applications
·      Performing an investigation and audit review process, and/or completing a special project relative to the SRF’s strategic plan
·      Preparing a presentation for senior leadership outlining their overall work process, an analysis of approaches and outcomes (including pitfalls and resolution)
·       Engaging with and learning from senior-level staff members

Preferred Qualifications
·      Continuing student at an accredited college or university in pursuit of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Business, Finance, or other major with some business classes and experience
·      Anticipated graduation dates between December 2022 - May 2024 are preferred but not required
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week from May through August 2022
  • Willingness to work in an in-person, virtual, and/or hybrid work environment as conditions warrant
·      Ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment and add value to the division while in a virtual work environment
·      Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities
·      Strong written and verbal communication skills
·      Natural inquisitiveness
·      Exceptional reliability
·      Proficiency in MS Excel, Word, and general IT aptitude

We anticipate that this internship will be primarily remote/virtual but may offer some opportunities to work in our downtown Richmond office. The majority of SCC employees are still teleworking but we will continue to evaluate our telework policies moving forward as things evolve.
