The Data Visualization Lead, under the direction and guidance of the Agency Analytics Unit Director within the Center for Health Statistics (CHS), manages and oversees the electronic publishing and distribution of data dashboards, reports, and websites hosted on Texas Health Data and the CHS website. The Data Visualization Lead provides advanced strategic oversight of the Data Visualization Team, including planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating team activities.

Specializes in the use of Tableau and other media to visualize, display, and disseminate DSHS datasets, reports, and websites. Works collaboratively with internal programs to maintain and improve CHS-managed websites. Creates, updates, and collaborates with various stakeholders and data programs throughout the agency to develop innovative, user-friendly data displays and visualizations. Responsible for adhering to existing agency branding and data security/privacy protocols with regards to distribution of health data.

Serves as an agency resource for data visualization. Consults with internal subject matter experts on the design, usability, and accessibility of agency and CHS web assets. Researches, analyzes, and evaluates new initiatives, industry best practices, and innovative approaches to determine their feasibility and applicability. Ensures CHS data products are created using data dissemination and visualization best practices.  

Essential Job Functions:
EJF 1: Utilizes Tableau and other tools to develop, create, and implement public health data visualization activities and projects. Serves as a leader for bringing industry best practices to the implementation of data visualization and dissemination solutions within CHS. Coordinates the development and management of data dashboards on the Texas Health Data website. Directs the processing and upload of data to other applicable CHS websites. Ensures data products adhere to accessibility standards. (40%)

EJF 2: Serves as team lead over professional level staff of the Data Visualization Team. Coordinates, prioritizes, and manages team projects and staff training. Implements team goals and objectives with limited guidance from the Agency Analytics Unit Director. Leads the team in its efforts to train data users throughout CHS and DSHS on data visualization and dissemination theories and best practices. Conceptualizes and implements continuous quality improvement on CHS products. Provides progress updates to CHS and DSHS leadership and strategic planning for the Data Visualization Team. (30%)

EJF 3: Provides technical assistance to DSHS data programs and data users related to data dissemination and visualization methodologies and best practices. Provides thought leadership on best practices and effective approaches for meeting accessibility requirements and standardizing how public health information is visualized on Texas Health Data. Ensures CHS data products are created using data dissemination and visualization best practices. (25%)

EJF 4: Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location. (5%)  

Salary Range: $4,917.00 - $6,000.00 monthly
