An independent state agency, the Betsy Lehman Center is charged with fostering a statewide program of research, data analysis, and information-sharing that engages health care agencies, providers, and consumers in initiatives that will reduce medical error and enhance patient safety in the Commonwealth. The Center was re-established by Chapter 224 of the Acts of 2012, An Act Improving the Quality of Health Care and Reducing Costs through Increased Transparency, Efficiency and Innovation, and is supported by the state’s Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA).

The Betsy Lehman Center is seeking an experienced Research Analyst and Coordinator III. This is a full-time position and will report to the Center’s Director of Research. The Center’s staff is currently working remotely, but will transition to a hybrid work model in January of 2022. At that time, all staff will be expected to work in the Center’s office at 501 Boylston Street, Boston, on at least two designated days per week.

The Research Analyst and Coordinator III will work on data and data-related projects pertaining to patient safety in Massachusetts. The analyst will have a passion for analyzing data, the capability to work on several projects at once, and a proven ability to effectively communicate analytic results in oral and written formats. The ideal candidate will be goal-oriented, creative, and a fast learner; will enjoy working in a collaborative, team-environment; and will be excited by the prospect of applying qualitative and evaluation skills to an innovative statewide strategic plan for meaningfully improving the safety of health care in the state. Additional research workstreams may include exploring new models for providing emotional first aid to staff and patients/families after adverse events and understanding social disparities in health care safety.

This position will remain open until filled.

Specifically, the analyst will:

Data collection and management

  • Design and manage qualitative data collection from partners and stakeholders
  • Develop survey questions, focus group and key informant interview methodology for research and quality improvement projects
  • Develop and maintain systems and data repositories to manage, organize, and track multiple datasets for research and quality improvement projects
  • Perform data management tasks (e.g. merging, recoding, rearranging) to facilitate qualitative data analysis
  • Develop qualitative data submission specifications and adapt existing methodologies for new domains of analysis that the Center seeks to undertake
  • Serve as a resource for external stakeholders that use the Center’s data
  • Redact data to remove any personal health information as required
  • Ensure adherence to all relevant standards for secure use of data including documentation and storage

Data analysis and presentation

  • Perform complex qualitative analyses such as qualitative content or narrative analysis
  • Interpret data accurately
  • Produce clear and comprehensive written analyses, graphics, tables, and oral presentations for diverse internal and external audiences, including peer-reviewed journals

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with qualitative data and qualitative research techniques that includes survey design and key informant interview and focus group data collection.
  • Strong analytic skills in order to access, query, manipulate, profile, document, and analyze different qualitative datasets, including experience using NVIVO
  • Experience interpreting and analyzing survey, focus group and/or or narrative data to produce clear and comprehensive oral presentations and written analyses for distribution to diverse internal and external groups
  •  Experience implementing and monitoring data collection through REDCap or SurveyGizmo for research and quality improvement projects
  • Experience with implementing and using data quality processes, including the demonstrated ability to assess accuracy of output and to investigate potential issues
  • Proficiency in producing graphs, tables, reports, and presentations using Excel, PowerPoint, and Word
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively—both orally and in writing—with others internal and external to the organization
  • Experience recruiting and scheduling participants for key informant interviews and stakeholders
  • Strong judgment and discretion; ability to strictly adhere to relevant policies governing confidential data
  • Experience working on multiple projects while successfully meeting deadlines
  • Experience working collaboratively, as well as independently, with multidisciplinary teams
  • General understanding of patient safety, health care policy, financing, and delivery systems in Massachusetts
  • Experience with evaluation techniques is a plus
  • Group facilitation experience is a plus
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus

Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicant must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time professional experience in business administration, health care planning or administration, public health policy or administration, human services policy analyses or administration, economics, the major duties of which included financial analysis of costs, expenses and revenue and/or the development, implementation and monitoring of the health care service delivery system and pricing methods.
Substitutions:

I. A Bachelor's degree with a major in health care administration, hospital administration, public health or health services administration, accounting, business administration, business management, public policy, public administration, economics, or similar degree may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.*

II. A graduate degree with a major in public health, health care administration, public health or health services administration, public policy, public administration, economics, or a similar degree may be substituted for a maximum of three years of the required experience.

Bargaining Unit: 06 NAGE, Reimbursement Systems Analyst III, Grade 15

The full time salary range for this position is $66,980.42 - $96,568.16.
