Nonprofit Leadership/ Camp Program Intern

Commitment

This internship is a flexible blend of remote work and onsite work, lasting between the winter of 2022 and August 30, 2022. The intern will be asked to be onsite two weekends per month, usually on weekends selected by the intern. With a few exceptions the schedule will be flexible, and time off and vacations will be granted.

The Program Internship is an 8 month commitment to serve and explore all aspects of camping ministry as it relates to Mount Shepherd Retreat Center. It is a paid position with housing included. The Program Intern is expected to serve in a summer staff role as a part of his or her internship.

Goals and Objectives

The goal of the program is to provide a mutual benefit to Mount Shepherd Retreat Center and the Program Intern. This happens in several ways. The Program Intern will have an impact on the off-season operations and summer programming while providing important program needs. In return, Mount Shepherd offers the intern camping ministry experience, discipleship, and constructive feedback around their job performance, which will be beneficial in their future vocation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Off-Season (Pre-May 25)
  • Abide by the Off-Season employee handbook.
  • Play an active role in our spring retreat season, including hosting groups at least once per month
  • Assist in facilitating off-season program schedule
  • Assist in recruiting and hiring staff for the 2022 summer season, including participating in on-campus job fairs
  • Assist in marketing efforts to recruit campers
  • Assist in developing special programs
  • Attend weekly staff Bible study
  • Attend weekly staff meetings
  • Meet one on one with the Executive Director and/or Program Director weekly
  • Submit to regular evaluation from Administrative Staff
  • Support camp in other various ways

Summer Season (May 25-August 31)
  • Work as a key leader on the summer camp staff
  • Summer job description tailored to the skills/talents of the intern
  • Abide by Summer Staff Covenant Agreement & employee handbook

Opportunities
Accompany year-round staff to conferences, trainings, meetings, paid for by Mount Shepherd

Training Requirements (to be provided by Mount Shepherd)

- First Aid/CPR
- Rope Course Level 1
- Archery Level 1
- Lifeguard*
*Notates Optional

Agreements
 Intern will comply with all policies relevant to year round staff and summer staff
Intern will have private housing at Mount Shepherd during off season, and shared housing in summer season
 Intern may eat any meals served to Mount Shepherd guests at no cost. 
 Intern will work with Administrative Staff to schedule regular time off
 When not in use by Mount Shepherd, camp facilities are available for Intern’s guests

Specific Responsibilities
Offseason
1. Abide by the Off-Season Covenant and Employee Handbook
The Program Intern is expected to model their Christian faith in all aspect of their life, including the
offseason.
2. Host off-season groups up to two times a month
Provide support for retreat season of Mount Shepherd by welcoming groups, being available to help with problems and assist in managing programming during their stay.
3. Assist in off-season program schedule
The Program Intern is responsible for assisting in scheduling staff for retreat groups. The includes
lifeguards, ropes staff, kitchen help as needed, and any other staff we might need.
4. Assist Administrator Staff in recruiting staff
As needed, the Program Intern will attend recruitment fairs to colleges and churches. The Program
Intern will also have the opportunity to assist in new staff interviews.
5. Assist Administrator Staff in recruiting campers
As needed, the Program Intern will travel to local churches and camp fairs to speak about the summer camp programs at Mount Shepherd. They will also assist in inviting campers and parents to register for camp.
6. Assist Administrator Staff in developing programs (camps, fundraisers, etc.)
The Program Intern will assist in the creation of camp programs and events at camp.
7. Attend weekly staff Bible study
The Program Intern will join the year-round staff each week for a Bible Study. If comfortable, the Program Intern will be occasionally asked to lead the study.
8. Attend weekly staff meetings
The Program Intern will be required to attend the weekly all-staff meeting to keep up to date on all
events happening at camp.
9. Meet one on one with the Executive Director and/or Program Director weekly
Each week the Program Intern will meet with a member of the Administrative Staff. This time will be set aside for learning and discussing a variety of topics.
10. Accompany year round staff to conferences, trainings, meetings
When available, the Program Intern will have the opportunity to attend conferences, trainings, and other events that pertain to professional development.
11. Undergo evaluation by Admirative Staff
The Program Intern will complete an in-depth evaluation during the off-season. This allows for the Intern to get a detailed view of their job performance and to ensure that their goals are being met.
12. Support camp in any other way the Administrator Staff requests
This roles is flexible. It is expected that the Program Intern be willing to assist in any other role needed during their time at Mount Shepherd.
Summer Season
1 Work as a key leader on the summer camp staff
The Program Intern will be a position on the summer staff. The summer job description will be tailored to the skills/talents of the Intern.
2 Abide by Summer Staff Covenant Agreement & Employee Handbook
The Program Intern is expected to model their Christian faith in all aspect of their life. During the
summer season, the Program Intern is to set an example for the other staff and must maintain a high level of integrity.
3 Undergo evaluation from Administrative Staff
The Program Intern will complete an in-depth evaluation during the off-season. This allows for the
Intern to get a detailed view of their job performance and to ensure that their goals are being met.
4 Support camp in any other way the Administrator Staff requests
This roles is flexible. It is expected that the Program Intern be willing to assist in any other role needed during their time at Mount Shepherd.
