Beautyocracy is a platform where women of color discover and shop beauty, together. We see people of color as the future of beauty. We envision a world where anyone — no what their skin tone or hair type — can open up an app, engage with products and content perfectly tailored to their identity, experiences, and preferences, then easily shop what they love. We recognize indie beauty as the new wave of top-tier brands and we’re crafting a space for them thrive. On our app, users will be able to shop the shelves of similar users, discover new brands in a hyper-personalized feed, and bond over beauty topics in niche channels with other community members.

We’re backed by Visible Hands VC and crazy passionate about inclusive beauty. Our founder is a Stanford MBA and our team hails from powerhouses in the beauty space including Estée Lauder, MAC and The Detox Market.

Our Four Content Pillars

Our four pillars represents the four types of content on our platform.

  • Stories. Content that reinforces the experiences of people of color as it relates to beauty and the beauty industry. A home for amateur writers to share their writing and work to bring out stories that might not otherwise be told. Stories on the the lived experiences of people of color acknowledge and highlight brands, founders, and people of interest.
  • Education. Content that educates and informs the reader. This includes the history and cultural relevance of beauty practices and trends, deep dives on ingredients, their applications, why and how they are effective, and context around beauty culture.
  • Think Pieces. New conversations on topics rarely or not yet explored within beauty. Articles that challenge readers to critically think about the industry, beauty standards, practices, and trends. Writing that showcases nuances in beauty for consideration and reflection.
  • Guides & Product-Focused Pieces. Pieces that support consumers in their buying process or listicles that aim to connect readers to brands that reflect their values.




What You'll Do


  • This role works under the direction of our Beauty & Content Editor; you'll work closely under our Editor throughout the writing & editing process, taking in constructive feedback and collaborating on the content roadmap.
  • Day-to-day responsibilities include pitching and writing original beauty stories (both short turnaround and longer lead), evergreen, service stories, and trend pieces about topics in skincare and inclusive beauty.
  • The majority of stories will require the writer to find sources, conduct phone interviews, and/or cite peer-reviewed studies.
  • You should stay up-to-date on the latest beauty trends and research and influential thought leaders in this space to produce authoritative content.
  • You'll need to manage ongoing assignments, including conducting interviews and follow-ups, if needed.
  • You'll write at least 2 short-form (500 - 1200 words) stories and 2 long form articles (1200-2000 words) per month comprising a mix of pitches and assignments.




What You'll Need

  • Strong writing experience, with a portfolio of prior work to show for it
  • Deep interest in beauty and skincare, in particular
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines
  • Impeccable writing skills including the ability to harness style, tone, and voice to appeal to your target audience
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to conduct thorough and meticulous research
  • Strong command of the written English language and an eye for how details can make a big impact
  • Excellent listening and communication skills
  • A bias for action with the ability to easily collaborate across teams
