Undergraduate Student Research Intern (MGH Division of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery)

Internship Overview
The undergraduate summer research internship in the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery will provide practical exposure to vascular and endovascular surgery and participation in research. Students will participate in outcome-based research projects with the goal of publishing and/or presenting their work alongside their physician mentors.

Dates & Duration: 5/31/2022 to 8/5/2022 (10 weeks). Students are expected to work a 40-hour work week (Mondays- Fridays 8am-5pm).

Format:
The Summer 2022 internship will be conducted in a hybrid format. A majority of the work will be done on campus if COVID regulations permit.

Intern Responsibilities:
Specific responsibilities for this position will include the following:
• Students will be expected to complete at least 1 research project to completion. This project will be presented during the last week of the internship.
• Independently reviews and collects research data according to FDA and Good Clinical Practice regulations
• Attend weekly virtual meeting with your physician mentor(s)and research team
• Collaborates with research staff, physician mentors, and other students using electronic data programs such as Lab Archives
• Assists with other research-related projects as assigned
• If hospital regulations allow, students may be invited to OR/ clinic for observation as hospital COVID regulations allow

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
The successful candidate will be highly motivated, eager to become knowledgeable about the research environment and curious about diseases of the vascular system. A high level of maturity is essential, as the Research Intern is given access to personal and confidential medical information. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks are essential.

This position is ideal for someone interested in pursuing medical school or further studies in medicine or clinical research.

Minimum Technical Standards: Comfort with computers, specifically the Windows operating system, is essential. Comfort in Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as the ability to learn how to use new software is also important.

Minimum Degree and Experience Requirements: Undergraduate Students Class of 2023 and 2024.

Coursework in biology, anatomy, or other pre-medical or related fields required. Coursework in statistics preferred. Prior research experience preferred. A GPA above 3.4 is preferred.

Computer/ Internet Requirements: To participate in the remote aspects of the internship, you will need a Windows computer with Windows8 or higher or a Mac computer that has space to download the VPN software and that has video capabilities for virtual meetings. Additionally, you need to have a secure internet connection (no public wifi) and a secure workspace where you can maintain confidentiality when talking on the phone or viewing confidential information, and where you will be less likely to be disturbed.
