Student Volunteer Position Description – (Office of Nuclear Safety) - Virtual

The mission of the Energy Department is to ensure America’s security and prosperity by addressing its energy, environmental and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions.
 
The U.S. Department of Energy is planning to have a student volunteer opportunity open for an Engineering or Math Science major, within our Office of Nuclear Safety, Office of Environment, Health Safety and Security (EHSS). Our Student Volunteer program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with meaningful opportunities to explore Federal service while in school. The Internship provides manager's a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements.
 
Students selected from this announcement will be assigned to the Office of Nuclear Safety, (AU-30), Office of EHSS (AU) in the Headquarters Office of the Department of Energy in Washington, DC. They will perform a wide variety of duties related to the missions of the Office of Nuclear Safety which includes the Office of Nuclear Safety Basis and Facility Design (AU-31), the Office of Quality Assurance and Nuclear Safety Management Programs (AU-32). 
 
This is an unpaid internship which will require approximately 10 hours per week and take place between September and December of 2021. A mentor from the Office of Nuclear Safety will be assigned to manage the workload and production; offering subject matter expertise and overall guidance. The intern for this position will gain graduate-level experience working with the organization and apply engineering, science and mathematical disciplines to form a basis for nuclear-related policy decisions.  
As an Office of Nuclear Safety, you will: (List tasks student will complete here)
§ Collect information, interact with stakeholders and use analytical methods, available technology and engineering judgement to provide policy recommendations for the testing of High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters used in safety applications throughout the Department of Energy.
§ Assist the Panel / Roundtable facilitators with preparing a session at the 2022 Waste Management Symposia.
§ Participate in special projects, as needed.
