Environmental Health Sciences Research Assistant

Our Health Science Practice is seeking to hire an Environmental Health Science Research Assistant to join our team in Fall/Winter 2023. This position could be remote or located in either Reston, VA, or Durham, NC.

Job responsibilities of an Environmental Health Sciences Research Assistant typically include any or all of the following:

  • Work on a diverse team that specializes in identifying and quantifying the effects of environmental pollutants, such as metals, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds, on human health and the environment. For example:
  • We support the Environmental Protection Agency’s Center for Public Health and Environmental Assessment (CPHEA) in developing risk assessments, such as Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) assessments. We also provide fate and transport modeling, exposure modeling, and risk assessment support to EPA’s Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards and the Office of Water.
  • We also support the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the Division of Translational Toxicology (DTT) in conducting systematic reviews and developing reports.
  • Review scientific and peer-reviewed literature to research a broad variety of scientific topics in environmental risk assessment, synthesize findings, and communicate them through various formats and media (e.g., written reports, online websites, visualizations).
  • Conduct study data extraction using electronic systematic review procedures and tools.
  • Conduct data and statistical analysis involving Excel, Access, R, SAS, Python, SQL, VBA, and/or other software. 
  • Participate in and support scientific workshop activities including notetaking, developing workshop summary reports, and other event logistics.  
  • Follow and implement standardized QA/QC procedures on documents and reports.

Desired skills include:  

  • Experience with environmental science systematic reviews (or literature reviews).
  • Previous experience with research and scientific writing, including editing, using reference management software (e.g., EndNote), and/or other proofreading skills.  
  • Strong qualitative and/or quantitative data collection, analysis, and/or visualization skills. 
  • The ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work in groups, individually, and virtually under strict deadlines in a fast-paced environment.  

Basic Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, public health, environmental engineering, chemistry, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, or another related subject.

Pay Range - There are multiple factors that are considered in determining final pay for a position, including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location, education and certifications as well as contract provisions regarding labor categories that are specific to the position. The pay range for this position is:

$43,697.00 - $74,285.00
