BDO USA, P.C.

Audit Intern

June - August 2018 • Stamford, CT

What I liked

Great internship program overall. Lots of opportunities to learn and dive into an auditing profession. I liked the people I had met during my internship - very knowledgable, approachable and nice.

What I wish was different

It's hard to wish that something would have been different, because it really is a great program.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and be yourself, don't pretend to be someone you think they'd like more.

Tax Intern

June - August 2020 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

The people at BDO Columbus office, specifically in the tax department, were everything I could have asked for as an intern. They were always willing to help whenever someone asked. They went out of their way to introduce themselves and interact with us. In addition, interns were given real-world work and responsibilities.

What I wish was different

Having an internship during the COVID-19 pandemic was certainly interesting. We were fully remote for the beginning of the internship. After a few weeks, we were given the option to go into the office whenever we wanted to.

Advice

I would suggest to ask as many questions as possible. Whether it be a question about the work you are doing or about the experience of a professional you are working with, people at BDO are happy to answer. In addition, trying to get involved in as many different things as possible is beneficial to the growth of an intern.

Audit Intern

July - August 2020 • Kalamazoo, MI

What I liked

I enjoyed the culture and willingness to help. I never felt like I couldn't ask someone a question. Also, I felt like I was a part of the team both while doing work and any outside activities.

What I wish was different

I wish there would have been more in person interaction and also interaction among other interns.

Advice

I would say don't be afraid to ask questions. As an intern, people know that you won't know anything and it's better to admit that you don't, ask a question, and learn how to do it. As opposed to pretending like you know how to do something and when you get given a task that you aren't prepared for, you get put in a really bad place.

Third Party Attestation Audit Intern

June - August 2023 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I loved my team and the work that we were doing! I felt very supported during these 10 weeks and can say nothing but positive things.

What I wish was different

Work was very slow. I often had to hunt for things to occupy my time, however this was a general problem because it was not busy season and there was not a lot of work to go around.

Advice

Enjoy it and make as many connections as possible! Talk to everybody that you can, because many of them have experience working at multiple public accounting firms and can offer you advice.

Tax Intern

January 2022 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

Work experience, culture of the firm and great management!

What I wish was different

I wish I was learning a little more in my current role. After being in the role for 10 months, I am not growing in the current role professionally.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions and be open to learning. Busy season in a public accounting firm can be hectic- planning your school work is important so you don't miss anything.

Audit Intern

January - March 2022 • Milwaukee, WI

What I liked

The networking process was very helpful. It was interesting to learn more about auditing and the importance of it.

What I wish was different

I wish that my coworkers and supervisors had been more honest. I received meaningful feedback throughout the internship about my various projects. However, that soon changed as I was told that I was a bad employee and not worthy of continuing my internship. The management team at BDO Milwaukee failed to accurately communicate their expectations throughout the course of my internship. The culture seemed to good to be true when I entered the internship. When I left, I was made fully aware that there was a serious cultural deficit at that office.

Advice

To all students who are considering BDO, please consider another firm.
