BPG Finance and Accounting - Advisory Intern

What I liked

The company culture was very laid back. I became real friends with my intern class and really enjoyed the people I worked with.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more opportunities to work directly with the other interns versus just seeing them at lunch and networking events.

Advice

Utilize the KPMG network and reach out to people throughout the company, they are very open to talk to you.

I was able to get a good comprehensive learning experience surrounding the world of public auditing. I had a lot of hands on experience and got a good feel of what to expect even I enter the work force

What I wish was different

Advice

Have a positive attitude and be prepared to stay late. I was told to leave at 5pm the first 4 weeks but the last 4 weeks I worked 10-12 hour days. Everyone’s experience was different so keep an open mind and be willing to ask a lot of questions

Audit Intern

June - August 2016 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

It is an amazing learning experience. You are expected to know the basic foundations of accounting (what you are taught in class at DePaul), but not how to actually perform an audit. This is beneficial because as long as you have the academic knowledge, all of the seniors and associates will guide you through what you need to know. As such, it is an incredible learning experience and it is up to you to determine how much you can absorb.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change anything.

Advice

Network as much as possible. You can be the best at doing your job, but if you don't go to any happy hours, success dinners, outings etc, nobody will know your name or who you are. This becomes a problem down the line when engagement teams are selecting new hires or even when you are up for a promotion. It never hurts to build your network.

Audit Intern

January - March 2017 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

It was an amazing company with tons of resources.

What I wish was different

The culture of the company is very intense, and the busy season hours do not allow much flexibility. There is a serious lack of work/life balance.

Advice

Always ask for feedback on every task/project you are assigned to and be transparent when you don't understand or need help with something.

IT Audit & Assurance Intern

June - August 2017 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

I loved all of the industry experience I got throughout my internship. I got to work with several different clients across a wide array of industries which gave me valuable exposure that I wouldn't have gotten at another internship.

What I wish was different

I honestly don't wish anything had been different. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life!

Advice

Learn as much as you can and ask as many questions as possible. The internship is what you make out of it. Take advantage of every possible opportunity available to you, because the time really does fly!

Corporate Management Intern

June - August 2017 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

For accounting majors who are looking to work in public accounting, but have not yet been exposed to the demands of each practice, this internship provides the perfect opportunity to understand where your skill sets fit best. Interns spent a week to a week and a half rotating through KPMG's three primary practices and were given projects to complete as well as regularly scheduled feedback. I was able to network employees at all levels (ie. first year associates, managers, partners). I am very appreciative for the challenges that I was given this summer as they served to shape both my professional and personal self.

What I wish was different

I can't say that there was anything I would have wanted to change. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Advice

Network, network, network! As an intern, you are not contributing as much technical skill so while it is important to focus on delivering the best project that you can, it is just as important to utilize the networks you have available to you. Schedule coffee and lunch meetings with associates, managers and partners. Don't be afraid to reach out to the higher-ups! Most do want to get to know you, and will commend you for taking the initiative. A strong network will help you land your dream role.
